Within the Warmoesstraat Biennial, the Creative Grounds project by @amsterdammuseum is receiving a premiere. Georgy Dendoe is hosting an ‘open workshop’ for two months. The open workshop functions as a public creative space where the work process (normally hidden) becomes visible, shareable, and open for discussion. It is not a final presentation, but a continuously evolving environment in which the maker, the material, and the public meet. The open workshop showcases craftsmanship as a process, not as a finished product.
Georgy Dendoe is maintaining a studio on the Zeedijk for two months, where he is adding screen printing to his artistic practice. For inspiration, he visited the collection of the Amsterdam Museum, where the Luyken prints caught his attention. He connects this with his mother’s collection of tin cans, which he found in his grandmother’s attic. The cans include Coca-Cola, Heineken, Sprite, 7-Up, Dr. Pepper, and brands that no longer exist. Many of them date from a time when tin cans were widely used for advertising: from recipes to complete ship sails that could be ordered. The convergence of these printed cans, advertising, and the subject of ‘the can’ forms the basis of the work period.
Georgy Dendoe is an Amsterdam-based artist and cultural maker, known as a driving force behind Smib collective and brand. His work moves between music, art, and street culture, rooted in city life. As a rapper, producer and artist, he connects personal observations to questions of identity, visibility, and collectivity.
About Location
NV Zeedijk is a small, active organization in the neighborhood that purchases properties in Amsterdam's city center, renovates and makes them sustainable where necessary, rents them out, and manages them. A defining characteristic of NV Zeedijk is its strong focus on the businesses on the ground floor. After all, these are defining features of both the street and the neighborhood. Other essential characteristics are its small scale and working based on clear norms and values. NV Zeedijk was and is unique in its management, specifically its social management.
