The LED text in Multiculturalism / Multicommunitarism alternates between the two words in the rhythm of urban billboards, such as those found in neighborhood shops. By reusing this familiar form, the work confronts passersby with the consequences and frictions of a multicultural society.
Everyone is called Mohamed is a sound installation in public space in which the name Mohamed is repeatedly called out: a name that is also used in Arab culture to address an unknown man. The repetition activates a physical and instinctive response and invites interaction. Both works function as context-specific interventions that engage the public and force them to take a position and reflect.
Younes Baba-Ali creates unconventional, critical art in public spaces and in unexpected locations. As a keen observer, he questions social structures, institutions, and the public itself. His work often presents itself as readymade, but combines technology, utensils, sound, and image with political, social, and ecological issues. Younes' context-specific interventions are disruptive and confrontational, taking their final form in dialogue with the public.
